Dicksonia antartica tree ferns for sale in a garden centre or local nursery used to be a rare sight but as tree ferns have risen in popularity over the last decade they can now be found for sale in a variety of places. Dicksonia antartica are one of the easiest species to grow but there are several decisions to make before splashing your hard earned cash!
The first decision you have to make is do you want to buy a mature Dicksonia antarctica specimen, or a plant you can grow on or simply find spores so you can germinate your own Tasmanian tree fern?
Trunked specimens – tend to be more expensive as you will either be buying a plant that has been grown in a nursery for several years or a plant that has been harvested from the wild and transported to you. The advantages are that you will have a plant that will make an instant impact. In the UK trunks are available in sizes from 1/2 – 12 feet tall. You should expect to pay between £15-25 a foot of trunk. If buying a potted trunk remember to consider some of the trunk is already buried. Buying tree ferns in Australia is a lot cheaper and can be brought for $8-15 a foot. Buying tree ferns in the USA is more difficult and prices vary more. It is difficult to find tree ferns in the States for sale taller than 3 foot, due to import restrictions.
• When buying trunks look for plants with a firm crown and check that emerging fronds have not rotted or the crown has orange gung in it. Where possible buy plants that have been grown on in a nursery and have re-fronded. *Ensure plants are legally harvested and exported by checking they have an environmental tag with a serial number*
Young Plants This is by no means instant, from a small plant in a 1 litre pot expect your fern to take three to four years to establish and start to show signs of a small trunk. This is a more environmentally friendly and sustainable way to grow tree ferns but does take more patience as the ferns need additional protection from frosts when young. I often bring species inside the house overnight if the frost is hard. You can sink young plants into the ground in there pots so they are part of your display and then lift and over winter and pot on the next spring.
Germinating plants from Spore
If you have a mature plant already in your garden and want more tree ferns this is a fun way to have a go at raising plants from spore and is the most cost effective way of building your collection.
